Send them off to explore

The Bucketts Scenic Walk is the obvious first move, a short stroll up to the base of the escarpment with views across the whole valley that make city visitors oddly emotional. Let them go alone. The experience is better without a running commentary.

For something wilder, Gloucester Tops delivers waterfalls, mossy cascades, Antarctic beech forest and a genuine sense of being somewhere extraordinary. Worth the drive, every time.

If they’re keen on something with a bit of history, the heritage gold mine at Copeland Tops runs guided Twilight Tours and Cultural Tours seasonally, which is exactly the kind of thing they’ll be telling dinner party stories about for the next six months.

Mountain bikers in the group? Barrington Bike Park has gravity-fed downhill trails that will keep them very happily occupied and pleasantly exhausted.

And for a genuinely peaceful afternoon, Woko National Park offers a remote riverside picnic spot by the Manning River that most people outside the region have never heard of. Keep that one in your back pocket.

The main shopping drag is Church Street and is worth a wander for boutique shopping, gifts and homewares. You’ll also discover what is, without question, the best little toy shop you’ve never heard of: Forest Of Play. Trust us on this one.

End the day together

The beer garden at The Roundabout Inn or Avon Valley Inn is the natural landing spot for a relaxed evening. Yim Thai is reliably delicious if they’re after something a little different.

And if the trip includes any kind of wine interest at all, cellar door tastings at Mograni Creek Estate, Faulls Ridge or Gloucester River Winery make for a very pleasant afternoon that somehow becomes early evening.

Saturday morning? The Gloucester Farmers Market at Billabong Park, with its free electric barbecues, covered dining area and playground for smaller guests, is a proper local institution. Load up and make a morning of it.

One sweet note before bed: Batter & Dough Patisserie. The baked treats are genuinely Parisian-standard and your big-city visitors will be quietly astonished. You don’t need to warn them. Just watch their faces.

For guests staying longer

Stroud is forty minutes away and thoroughly worth the detour. Self-guided heritage walk, the Quambi House museum, Silo Hill views, and lolly jars at Stroud Milk Bar that will delight anyone between the ages of six and eighty-six.

Fifteen minutes further on, The Farmers Wife Distillery serves multi award-winning gin and very good food in a setting that makes people immediately wonder why they don’t live here. Fair question.

Ellenborough Falls, the highest single-drop waterfall in NSW, is ninety minutes away via Wingham and worth every minute of the drive. Stop in Wingham on the way for Kaye’s Kitchen Cafe, then let the falls speak for themselves.

One last thing

Weekday and shoulder season visits mean quieter trails, easier parking and a more relaxed experience at places like Gloucester Tops. Worth floating to your guests early.
