Your people are coming to Taree. Here’s how to show family or friends a genuinely good time with less stress for you.

Taree has a way of surprising people. They arrive expecting a regional service town which, yes, fair enough, it is. Then the Manning River catches the morning light, or they stumble into a laneway and find food from three different continents within fifty metres of each other… and suddenly the agenda shifts.

Your job as host is to engineer those moments of pleasant surprise. Luckily, the town is full of them.

Start the day right

Queen Elizabeth Park along the river is a lovely place to ease into the morning, with the optional extension to Apex Lookout for mist rising across the valley that makes even the most reluctant early risers feel quietly pleased with themselves.

Breakfast options are genuinely good. Caterbox Cafe, Cafe Thyme and Raw Sugar all deliver. For river views with your breakfast The Boathouse Cafe offers a huge selection with generous serves.

The Thursday Produce Market on the riverbank is the kind of thing visitors from the city tell their friends about for months, local produce, the river, a reusable bag they definitely didn’t bring and will have to buy.

Send them off to explore

Manning Regional Art Gallery is the one that always catches people off guard. Contemporary exhibitions and touring shows in a heritage Federation cottage, with a local collection that’s far more impressive than the modest signage suggests. Worth at least an hour.

Deep Water Shark Gallery shows work from local Aboriginal artists and is genuinely worth seeking out.

Taree Heritage Walk connects the key historic sites in a self-guided loop that suits anyone who likes their sightseeing with a bit of context.

Koolah Creek Highland Cattle at Langley Vale is a legitimate highlight for animal lovers and anyone travelling with children, because highland cattle are, objectively, the most photogenic animals in the Manning Valley and possibly the world. Check ahead for farm tour availability.

End the day together

This is where Taree quietly shows off: Guac N’ Roll for modern Mexican, Chim Young for authentic Thai, Twohans for Korean and Japanese yakiniku, Jashan Lounge for Indian, Cafe Giardino for Italian, Press Bar & Grill for Nepalese. Pick a cuisine and go. The variety is one of those things locals take entirely for granted until a visitor points out how remarkable it is for a regional town.

Cellar door tastings at Jacaranda Estate Winery at Wingham makes for a lovely afternoon that stretches naturally into early evening.

And if there’s a show on at Manning Entertainment Centre or something interesting at the Flett Studio, book ahead. Both are worth it.

For guests staying longer

Old Bar is fifteen minutes away and dangerously easy to spend a whole day in.

Coffee at Buyi Espresso Bar, a surf lesson with Saltwater Surf School, cocktails and tapas at Flow Bar with live music on weekends.

And if anyone wants to stay overnight, the Boogie Woogie Beach House above the bar offers what might be the most characterful accommodation on the coast: rooms themed around music legends so you can shower with David Bowie and take a bath with Debbie Harry. We’re not making that up.

Ellenborough Falls is sixty minutes away via Wingham and absolutely worth the drive and the effort on those stairs.

Harrington, where the Manning River meets the Pacific Ocean, is thirty minutes in the other direction. Continue ten minutes to Crowdy Head Lighthouse for whale watching, then on to Diamond Head in Crowdy Bay National Park for those famous kangaroos on the beach.

One last thing

Shoulder season and midweek visits unlock a quieter, more relaxed version of everything listed here. Pass that wisdom on early. Your guests will arrive calmer, find parking, get a table without a wait and leave wondering why they don’t come back more often.

The honest answer? They probably will.
